"Vejigante Oil Painting on Wood"

from $100.00

Puerto Rican Fine Art + Decor by Lena del Sol Langaigne

This listing is for my colorful, Vejigante oil painting on a solid red oak plaque. I sanded, conditioned and hand-painted each piece and varnished with a light gloss, oil varnish. Includes a small d-ring hooks for hanging. The origins of the vejigante mask tradition date back to medieval Spain. The vejigante represented the Moors who were defeated by St. James. People dressed as demons (vejigantes) in a procession thrown to honor St. James.

In modern day Puerto Rico, the vejigante is now heavily influenced by the Taino and African cultural traditions. Vejigantes are most closely associated with the town of Loíza and Ponce.
